With the rapid uptake of LED lighting and an ever increasing choice in LED products it can be a minefield selecting quality LED lighting suitable for a given lighting application.

When to Use LED or Another Light Source - A Guide to LED Lighting Part 1

There are a variety of both LED luminaires (new lighting fixtures with LED light sources incorporated) and LED direct replacement lamps available to help achieve a more efficient and economical solution. LED is not yet ideal for all lighting installations, more traditional light sources like HID and Fluorescent are still able to provide a better and more energy efficient solution in particular applications.

So when is it best to use LED or traditional sources of lighting? For this reason EYE Lighting have developed an information guide called “All the KnowLEDge You Need”. It’s an unbiased guide providing information for anyone considering a new lighting project, exchanging a current installation or upgrading to new technology. Broad guidelines are outlined that can be followed to get the most suitable solution.

In general, LED is great for creating an effect derived from ambient or accent lighting. Examples would include emergency/exit lighting, decorative lighting or outdoor area lighting. A common thread with these applications is that specific tasks do not need to be undertaken, colour rendering is not critical and reduced energy consumption is achieved.

Conversely, HID and Fluorescent light sources do offer high lumen output packages that are best suited to office and factory environments where task lighting is critical. Generally, they are medium to high wattage installations. Applications for general task lighting require high average lighting levels across a large area featuring high colour rendering and low glare.
