Under ground electrical cable

Published: 1 September 2014 Category: Trade Talk

Question from Voltimum user: I have a spool of cable with the following information silk screened on the wire jacket: E138070 AWG TYPE THNN or THWN OR MTW...

Under ground electrical cable
It is not designated as UF (underground feeder)
600 VOLTS Gasoline and oil resistant II VW-T (U.L.) PIRELLI Cable corporation.

Can this cable be buried under ground?

If so I would like to run it from my house breaker box to my small shed. The current buried cable is indicating a short between the legs. This occurred after a lighting strike near the house and shed.

Answer provided by Bob Merrick, Commerical Manager - Technical, Prysmian

The cable described does not meet Australian Standard AS/NZS 5000.1 for 0.6/1kV applications (insulation radial thickness) and is not suitable for direct burial per AS/NZS 3000 as it is considerd an insulated un sheathed construction ( refer attachment). It is not suitable for your intended installation.
