The release of the Renewable Energy Action Plan by the New South Wales Government shows the potential of renewable energy to drive new jobs and investment throughout the state, according to the Clean Energy Council.
Clean Energy Council Chief Executive David Green said the plan demonstrated the New South Wales Government's commitment to a secure, affordable and clean energy future.
"With the national 20 per cent by 2020 Renewable Energy Target in place, every state has the opportunity to take advantage of our abundance of natural resources, like the sun, wind and bioenergy," Mr Green said.
"It makes sense to plan ahead to fully unlock the economic benefits that are on offer through the Renewable Energy Target scheme, which is set to generate another $18 billion in investment by 2030.
"New South Wales stands to generate 6000 new jobs in regional areas through renewable energy projects, which will provide a boost to local communities."
Mr Green said that alongside its Energy Efficiency Action Plan, New South Wales was well on the way to delivering an integrated approach to clean energy that could help secure lower energy bills, empower consumers and provide real economic benefits across the state.
Another sign of progress has been the appointment of the state's first Renewable Energy Advocate.
"The new Renewable Energy Advocate, Amy Kean, is already helping to facilitate renewable energy developments in the state, and there is much more on the way," he said.
"Just when the cost of fossil fuels is rising, New South Wales stands to reap the benefits of both energy efficiency and lower-cost renewables, giving consumers a really smart option for the future."
