As a founding signatory to the FluoroCycle scheme, EYE Lighting’s commitment to recycling lamps and sustainability is as strong as ever. FluoroCycle is a scheme launched to recycle lamps and reduce the problem of mercury build up in the environment caused by the disposal of mercury-containing lamps.
According to the Australian Bureau of Statistics, in 2008 approximately 52 million mercury-containing lamps were imported; this does not include lamps shipped inside luminaires or other discharge lamps. The FluoroCycle scheme also states that in Australia an “estimated 95 per cent of lamps that contain mercury end up in landfill each year”. These statistics provide some context as to how big the problem can potentially become if left unchecked. By opting to recycle old lamps you can support this initiative and actively help reduce environmental issues associated with the build-up of mercury levels in landfill.
Lamps that contain mercury include CFLs (<5mg), Linear Fluorescents (<15mg) and HID Lamps (30-100mg).
When your next re-lamp or lighting system replacement project is due check the FluoroCycle http://www.fluorocycle.org.au website for more information on the safest way to dispose of lamps or contact your local EYE Lighting rep for advice.
