Nest products can now be connected to home automation systems to control lighting, music, video and security.

Nest now works with popular home automation
This means that users can connect Nest products to popular home automation platforms like Control4, Crestron, Remote Technologies Incorporated (RTI) and Universal Remote Control (URC). So you can control your Nest Thermostat through your Control4 app or have your RTI system get an alert when your Nest Protect senses smoke or carbon monoxide.

The tie-in also allows Nest products to work in tandem with products like Dropcam. For example, when your Nest Protect alarm goes off, Dropcam can record a clip of the smoke or carbon monoxide event and save it for you even if you don’t pay for Cloud Recording.

Additionally, when you set your Nest Thermostat to Away mode and leave the home, Dropcam can automatically turn on its motion alerts to let you know if anyone has entered the home while you are away.

With the announcement, we’re finally starting to see Google put all of the pieces of the home automation puzzle together. If you recall, the search giant purchased Nest Labs earlier this year for $3.2 billion in cash before scooping up video monitoring startup Dropcam for $555 million a few months back.
