AS/NZS 3084 ‘Telecommunications installations— Telecommunications pathways and spaces for commercial buildings’ has recently been revised and is now available in draft format for industry comment – all BICSI South Pacific members and BRCA Cablers are invited to download and review this important document and comment on it.

This is the first time since 2003 that the standard has been updated, so it introduces many new adjustments to accommodate numerous technology migrations and developments in building and OHS regulations.
The standard was released as a draft on 14 April and will be open for public comment until 16 June. It is then expected to be published later this year as ‘AS/NZS 3084:2016’.
According to the Convenor of the Standards Australia CT-001-65 ‘Pathways and Spaces’ sub-committee, Peter Guenther RCDD: “This is a very comprehensive update with substantial new content.“Importantly, it provides an alignment with AS/NZS ISO 14763.2 to eliminate overlap and removal of the now obsolete ISO/IEC 18010 section.”
Some of the other notable changes include:
- Updated equipment room requirements, particularly involving electrical distribution;
- Overhead optical fibre trunking for equipment rooms;
- Guidance on the application of NABERS to equipment rooms constituting a ‘data centre’;
- Earthquake-rating compliance of pathways for life-safety critical facilities;
- Comprehensively revised and expanded underground pit-and-pipe design and installation guidelines;
- The inclusion of trenchless underground conduit pathways; and
- Revised building entry and riser capacities.

BICSI South Pacific will be making a formal response to the invitation for comment in June and members are welcome to pass on their comments to the BICSI office to be consolidated into its submission.
However, you are most welcome to make your own submission expressing your comments about the draft standard if you prefer.
