In the innovative world of LED lighting, upgrading old inefficient technology will help reduce energy consumption, reduce carbon emissions and provide many more years of service before needing replacement.

Considerations for Selecting LED Direct Replacement Lamps – A Guide to LED Lighting Part 2

By its own nature, LED technology is different to halogen or incandescent lamps, the old rules have changed and here is a helpful guide to ensuring your next LED direct replacement lamp is the best choice.

What to check before upgrading:

  1. Confirm the size and weight of the new LED lamp against the lamp being replaced. Will it fit perfectly without components hanging out or modifying the existing luminaire?
  2. For downlights, check that the existing socket attachment position matches the light distribution of the replacement LED lamp. Failure to check may result in the light beam being cut-off, changing the light output distribution.
  3. If using a dimmer, ensure the LED replacement lamp is dimmable.
  4. LED Bulbs (round or candle) are not suitable for outdoor luminaires.
  5. Confirm the LED replacement lamp can operate in the ambient temperatures where used.

Selecting the correct lamp for maximum satisfaction:

  1. Select the appropriate colour temperature and lumen output to suit the application. The LED life span is up to 50,000 hours or 8 – 10 years, getting this right is important.
  2. Reconfirm the position and light distribution angle, LED replacement lamps range from narrow to wide beam. It is important to select the light distribution to suit the current luminaire installation.

How to decide whether to upgrade to an LED luminaire or LED lamp:

Replace the lamp – if the installation is between 1 – 5 years old.

Replace the luminaire – if the installation is 5 – 10 years old and you are thinking of moving or renovating. Additionally, replace the luminaire if it is 10 years or older.
