Employees and businesses from across Australia were honoured for their outstanding contributions to work health and safety at the 9th annual Safe Work Australia Awards held at Old Parliament House in Canberra last night.

In congratulating the winners and finalists on their achievements Minister for Employment Senator Abetz recognised the hard work, passion and positive impact they have made to work health and safety.
 
“I am delighted to see individuals, small businesses and large organisations finding solutions to make their workplaces safer,” Senator Abetz said.
 
“Their commitment and passion has made a difference in the community and ensured safer workplaces leading to more people getting home safely to their families.
 
“The leadership and innovation of people and organisations like those celebrated at the Awards that not only helps to reduce the number of workplace deaths and injuries but also helps to create a positive workplace culture.
 
“Congratulations to this year’s winners and finalists - their outstanding efforts are helping Australia get a step closer to achieving our vision of healthy, safe and productive working lives.”
 
Thirty-seven finalists from across Australia were honoured at the awards ceremony. The finalists were winners of their respective category at their work health and safety regulator awards in 2013.
 
The Safe Work Australia Awards showcase the best workplace safety solutions, innovations and systems across our nation and are a celebration of what can be achieved to reduce workplace incidents and deaths.

Category 1 – Best Workplace and Safety Management System
 
This award recognises demonstrated commitment to continuous improvement of workplace health and safety through the implementation of an integrated systems approach.
 
Winner - VEC Civil Engineering Pty Ltd (Tasmania)
 
Category 2 – Best Solution to an Identified Workplace Health and Safety Issue
 
This award recognises excellence in developing and implementing a solution to an identified workplace health and safety issue. Entries for this award may include a product solution, design/engineering innovation, training program, awareness raising activity or other risk control measure that reduces the risk of work related injury and disease.
 
Winner - Frasers Livestock Transport (Queensland)
 
Category 3 – Best Workplace Health and Safety Practice/s in a Small Business
 
This award recognises high standard workplace health and safety practices in small business. This category is limited to small businesses that have fewer than 20 employees or full-time equivalents.
 
Winner - Zetco Valves Pty Ltd (New South Wales)
 
Category 4a – Best Individual Contribution to Workplace Health and Safety – by an employee
 
This award recognises individuals who have made an exceptional difference to health and safety.
