With public comments recently closed on the proposed revision to AS/NZS 1158.6 Lighting for Roads and Public Spaces, Part 6: Luminaires, it is planned that this standard will split into two documents.

The first will be AS/NZS IEC 60598.2.3 which is a direct adoption of IEC 6059-2-3, Ed.3.1 (2011) outlining the minimum safety requirements for road lighting luminaires. The second document currently known as DR SA/NZS TS 1158.6 will proposedly outline the technical specifications for product performance including Solid State Lighting (commonly known as LED) to ensure effective luminaire performance in varying operating and environmental conditions across New Zealand and Australia.
This change will represent an important evolution of the lighting standard to acknowledge the benefits and energy saving potential that LED can deliver when it comes to street and roadway lighting. However, it should be well noted that until the new standard is officially published, adopting the use LED for street and road lighting is not permitted
