Aerodrome & Airport Apron Lighting Solution

Published: 13 May 2015 Category: Manufacturer News

Lighting for airports and aerodromes is always a technically challenging project given the wide range of signal and operational conditions that are required. Careful consideration must be given to ensure that all lighting systems comply with the relevant specifications and standards.

Aerodrome & Airport Apron Lighting Solution

In Australia, CASA (Civil Aviation Safety Authority) is tasked with promoting aviation safety and their primary role is to manage regulation of civil air operations. The MOS (Manual of Standards) Part 139 details requirements for aerodrome lighting which covers all aspects including apron floodlighting.

In New Zealand, the regulator is the CAA (Civil Aviation Authority of New Zealand).

EYE Lighting specialises in providing CASA compliant apron lighting, from basic aerodromes through to sophisticated international airports, with a range of high performance floodlights.

Apron floodlighting must be designed to provide adequate illumination on the apron service area particularly aircraft parking positions. The aim is to provide effective horizontal and vertical lighting in this area with minimal direct or reflected glare to aircraft pilots (in air or on ground), air traffic controllers and service personnel on the ground. CASA also states the requirement to floodlight from 2 or more directions to minimise shadows on the apron.

Lighting levels for aprons in Australia are still divided into two categories: larger planes and smaller planes. CASA notes that aeroplanes bigger than aircraft code 3C are larger planes and code 3C aeroplanes or smaller are smaller planes. It should also be noted that ICAO (International Civil Aviation Organisation) has moved to only one standards for all types of apron floodlighting based on the higher standard. For illumination levels and more details, see CASA’s Aerodrome Lighting document.

Effective Apron Floodlighting Solution

EYE Lighting recommends the Harrier floodlight as an ideal solution for aerodrome apron lighting; it is a low, glare “cut-off” floodlight that is available with a narrow or medium beam. Special features include:

  • CASA compliant rapid restart control gear specifically for aerodrome lighting applications with instant lamp re-strike.
  • High performance reflector designed to maximise light levels and eliminate light pollution.
  • Asymmetrical (Imax 60°), perfect controlled and uniform light distribution.
  • Simple maintenance with easy lamp access when required.
  • An anti-vacuum breathing device eliminates stress between gaskets and components whilst also preventing pollutant ingress to ensure reliable operation over time.
