The Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) has published a draft replacement New Zealand Energy Efficiency and Conversation Strategy (NZEECS), which is now available for public consultation.

To improve energy productivity and the use of renewable energy, the draft strategy proposes a set of four objectives covering key groups of stakeholders (businesses, individuals, public sector and market participants). The supporting actions listed in the strategy focus on three priority areas: (1) Renewable and efficient use of process heat, (2) Efficient and low-emissions transport and (3) Innovative and efficient use of electricity.
While the EEA welcomes this update to the now expired NZEECS 2011-2016, we identified a number of issues or omissions in the strategy that we believe are worth raising to MBIE, including the need for clear and measurable objectives, as well as stronger coordination and collaboration among different stakeholders.
